Couples Counselling in Sussex

Support for your relationship, whatever you're facing

Relationships change. Sometimes you feel close and connected; sometimes you find yourselves stuck in the same arguments, struggling to communicate or wondering how you got here.

You don't have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to seek counselling.

Couples counselling can give you the space to stop, listen and understand what is happening between you.

It can help you strengthen a relationship that is already working well, work through difficulties, rebuild trust and connection, or explore what happens next if you are considering separation.

At Relationships Sussex, we work with all kinds of couples and relationships. Our experienced counsellors provide a confidential, professional and non-judgemental space where both people can be heard.

Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to figure it out alone.

GET IN TOUCH ABOUT COUPLES COUNSELLING

What can couples counselling help with?

There is no single reason to come to couples counselling.

You might be looking for support because:

  • You keep having the same arguments without resolving them.
  • You are struggling to communicate or feel heard.
  • You feel disconnected from each other.
  • Trust has been damaged and you want to understand what happened.
  • You are finding it difficult to navigate a major life change.
  • Parenting, family life, work or other pressures are affecting your relationship.
  • You want to improve your relationship before problems become more serious.
  • You want to understand each other better and communicate more effectively.
  • You are experiencing difficulties with intimacy or your sex life.
  • You are unsure whether you want to stay together.
  • You have decided to separate and want support in navigating that process well.

You don't need to have a particular problem or be at breaking point to benefit from counselling. Sometimes couples simply want a relationship MOT: a chance to check in, talk openly and make sure they are still moving in the same direction.

Couples counselling isn't about taking sides

It can feel daunting to talk to someone about difficulties in your relationship, particularly when emotions are running high.

Your counsellor isn't there to decide who is right or wrong, or to tell you whether you should stay together. Their role is to help you explore what is happening, understand different perspectives and communicate in a more constructive way.

Counselling provides a space where both people can speak openly and be listened to.

The aim isn't necessarily to avoid disagreement. Healthy relationships can include differences of opinion and difficult conversations. It is about finding ways to handle those differences with greater understanding, respect and care.

Sometimes the goal is to stay together. Sometimes it is to understand what comes next.

Couples counselling isn't only about saving a relationship.

If you are unsure whether your relationship can or should continue, counselling can help you explore those feelings without pressure to make an immediate decision.

For some couples, counselling helps them reconnect and build a stronger relationship. For others, it helps them understand that they want different things.

If you decide to separate, counselling can also provide a space to work through that decision and consider how you can move forward with respect and as little additional hurt as possible,  particularly when you need to continue communicating or parenting together.

There is no predetermined outcome. The focus is on helping you understand your relationship and make informed decisions about what comes next.

What Happens in Couples Counselling?

Your first appointment gives you and your counsellor an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to get from it.

You may already know exactly what you want to work on. Or you may simply know that something isn't working and you're not sure where to begin.

Your counsellor will help you explore this together and consider what might be helpful.

There is no fixed number of sessions you have to commit to. We usually recommend starting with an initial appointment followed by around six sessions, but your needs are individual and you can review your progress with your counsellor as you go.

Relationships Sussex is a not-for-profit counselling charity with more than 60 years of experience supporting people and relationships across Sussex.

Our counsellors are qualified, experienced professionals who receive ongoing professional supervision.

We understand that talking about relationship difficulties can feel vulnerable, and we aim to provide a space that is both compassionate and professionally grounded.

We support couples from different backgrounds, ages, sexual orientations and gender identities.

Most importantly, we don't assume what your relationship should look like or what outcome you should want. We start with where you are.

Our current couples counselling fees are £72 for online counselling and £80 for face to face counselling.

We also offer reduced-cost counselling for people who meet the criteria for our bursary scheme, subject to available funding.

For full details of our current fees and financial support, visit our Counselling Fees page.
